Week 3: Music and technology

Chapter 2: Technology and musical style

Exercise

Computers and musical style:

Hip-Hop, Trap and electronic music

Keyboard as de facto standard:

Strengths:

  1. Pianist friendly
  2. Easy to handle as the pitch relationship is clear.

Weakness:

  • Not friendly to other instrument players
  • Unnatural phring and articulation for other instruments.
  • Key board interface is not easy to capture them as the articulation and details of the music such as breathing, and vibrato cannot demonstrate naturally in MIDI.
  • Velocity, Aftertouch and expression pedal…
Chapter 3: The arrival of MIDI

The gate/CV control method

Strengths:

  • accurate control
  • expressive modulation

Weaknesses:

  • massy patch cables
  • compatibility issues, different systems may use different voltage ranges.

MIDI files

It sounds right on a guitar but drums are not right as some of the “note” is muted.

Time quantization: Double clicking the midi track and choose the ‘note’ and adjust the ‘strength’. –It sounds rigid and weird until ‘1/64’

Scale(pitch) quantization: Double clicking the midi track–>Scale quantize–It changes the pitch to close to the scale I chose.

Inversion– Command A-> Functions-> MIDI Transform->Reverse Position

Retrograde
